For over a century cranberries have been more than a Thanksgiving staple; they've also been heralded for their reported ability to prevent and even treat urinary tract infections.
But clinical research attempting to link cranberry consumption to a reduction in urinary tract infections remains somewhat inconsistent. A 2012 study by a team from Taiwan and the U.S., published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that consuming cranberries did seem to prevent urinary tract infections in certain populations, but qualified the findings with a strong word of caution against using the "folk remedy" as a treatment.
Most research on the cranberry's effect on infections focuses primarily on its ability to prevent bacteria from attaching to a host cell. If the bacteria can't stick to bladder cells, they can't cause infections. But, in recent years, researchers at McGill University in Montreal have uncovered a new weapon that cranberries have against bacteria.

It’s a natural remedy and multiple purposed.. and tasty too.
Way to work that link in there...impressive.
It’s nice to see the cranberry get some positive press. This year I plan to open the can and dump it directly into the garbage, instead of having to move it around the fridge for a week where it takes up valuable real estate.
Put the cranberries IN something...don’t open one of those goofy cans and dump it out. LOL
Personally I’m making cranberry/cherry salad. Mmmmmm.
They begin the article with that then go on to scientifically prove additional mechanisms (to one already known) for the efficacy of cranberrry for UTIs. Something isn't Real Clear about that.
Well I do what I can given the material. You don’t think it was...um...forced?
The problem I see is that the cranberry power was applied directly to the bacteria cultures. So?...How does the researcher propose getting this powder into the bladder in someone who has a UTI?
OK that made me laugh out loud.... co-worker is wondering what is up with me. No one likes cranberry sauce at your place, I take it?
I love cranberry sauce, it is one of my favorite parts of Thangsgiving dinner...but then everything is my favorite part of Thangsgiving dinner. :^)
If you don’t like it, why do you have it and why have you kept it so long?

The word in the current Forbes is that the Ocean Spray folks have several new products under development in their R&D labs to do just that.
Sure, but won't most '90s music do that?
Your problem in using canned cranberries. Use the fresh ones, and squirt a bit of lemon juice in them. I think they are much better that the canned ones, and are a great compliment to cornbread dressing.
But maybe cornbread dressing is a southern thang........
Tradition. It’s not the same without the can shaped goo in the way.
Might as cut out the middleman.
Whole family roaring with this one.
Great Thanksgiving advice on FreeRepublic.com!
If it’s a mild infection it’s worth giving the folk remedy a try for a day before seeking professional treatment. If you’ve got a fever, or feel terrible, see the doctor right away - you don’t need a UTI climbing to your kidneys.
IME lots of water and large doses of Vitamin C work as well as cranberry juice, more cheaply, and more likely to be at hand - the idea is to acidify the urine so bacteria can’t stick to the wall of the bladder and then flush them out.
It’s probably good if someone knew how to make it. If you can’t throw cheese on top of it and call it Cranberry Parmesan, we’ve got no good recipes in the family tree.
