The reporter could have found out a lot about Wilson from his colleagues at Princeton and by looking into the controversies Wilson got into there, but didn't bother to do the digging, and relied more on personal impressions.
IIRC, Lincoln as a wartime President didn’t have a very sympathetic press. Cartoons depicted him as flummoxed, burr headed, and the same height as his critics/opponents.
All that changed after he was assassinated. Same-same JFK.
