THANK YOU! He was a lunatic who was protected by his doctors ( who don’t want to call anything a mental disorder) and by his mother ( who paid the ultimate price)! Rather than admit and deal with such a mentally defective person while young, too many parents and professionals protect them, deny reality, and foist them upon an unsuspecting public. Now, because his mother wanted to protect her maniac, many mothers buried their healthy beautiful children.
We need institutions for the dangerously mentally ill and we need them yesterday. The fantasy of ‘treat them as normal and they will be’ is costing lives.
It’s very difficult to get someone hospitalized for mental illness, and there are very very few long-term care facilities. Rep. Deeds’ son was turned away for lack of space one day before he attacked his father and killed himself. I knew a woman who tried for years to protect her son and get treatment for him; he killed both her and his father and NOW he is in hospital for the rest of his life. The parents may well be doing the best anyone can given the our laws and the existing treatment opportunities, and still fail.
