I think you have the most sound theory. I would also throw in conjecture that some of his peers bragged they “made it” with the teacher. When he tried, she said no. She is dead.

There are a number of changes.
Danvers (”Salem Village”) split off from Salem in 18th Century. Salem abides, the capital of Essex County, and home of numerous museums and “museums”, the latter mostly tourist traps dedicated to celebrating Halloween all year long.
