U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged developed nations to "lead by example" Wednesday as a climate change conference bogged down over support for poor nations trying to adapt to a warming world.
The two-week conference in Poland's capital, Warsaw, opened with a hunger strike by the top delegate from the typhoon-battered Philippines.
A study released Tuesday by researchers at Britain's East Anglia University found greenhouse gas emissions will top 39 billion tons in 2013. The rate of increase has slowed, but the improvement is a drop in the bucket by global standards.
U.N. members have committed to setting up a $100 billion-a-year fund to deal with climate change. But Steve Kretzmann of the U.S.-based environmental group Oil Change International said global subsidies for fossil fuel industries already top $500 billion and some estimates run as much as $2 trillion.
"There is plenty of money there," Kretzmann said. "It's just going in the wrong direction for the moment."

Why don’t we just throw a virgin in a volcano and be done with it?
Exactly with some people getting rich off of a lie.
No money, no show.

Well said.
I’m not rich and I’m not poor.
But, I have a better chance of becoming poor before I become rich because of this fk’n lie!
You can’t make any money off that. Now, if you sold tickets, then I am sure that the AGW priests would be game.
That’s the idea, amigo.
They are still doing these global warming conferences? After all the lies and smoking gun e-mails about doctored data and all that? We still have to listen to this crap???
There is too much loot to grift for them to quit too easily.
“We still have to listen to this crap???”
You don’t have to listen, but you do have the pleasure of funding it. /s
“They are still doing these global warming conferences?”
Well, yes, they are. But now the issue is “climate change,” which happens to be a natural phenomenon constantly and continually occurring.
At least they're doing the consistent thing and getting there by walking, skateboarding, or solar-powered balloon.
“Why dont we just throw a virgin in a volcano and be done with it?”
It’ll only happen if NGO’s or the UN can somehow monetize it and grab a chunk as the monetization flows to third world dictators and then to Swiss bank accounts.
