WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. government started the first month of the 2014 budget year with a smaller budget deficit, signaling further improvement in the nation's finances at a time when lawmakers are wrestling to reach a deal to keep the government open past January.
The Treasury Department said Wednesday that the deficit in October was $91.6 billion. That's 24 percent lower than the $120 billion imbalance recorded in October 2012. The deficit is the gap between the government's tax revenue and spending.

Maybe just fumbling the Feral Gov’ment to a halt is the best economic news the territory once known as “the United States of America” can expect, given the present circumstances.
“Lead, follow or get the Hell out of the way” is much more than just a mantra. Very succinct description of how to achieve success in anything.
Only there are some things that should NOT succeed.
And yet Mitch McConnell says there won’t be any more shutdowns!
If we could shut the government down for the next three years, just think of the progress we could make on the disastrous federal debt.
It doesnt explain how the shutdown saved any money, especially since the furloughed employees all got paid for their time off. What $$ wasnt spent??
What it did was delay the spending for two weeks.
The sequester is different, the employees dont get paid for time off.
indeed, when they are not at work they do not steal supplies and party. This is why they love coming back to “work”
the money was saved on Epa useless inspections and other parties they have on our properties.
think “no lobster dinner between GOPe McCain and Obama” during the shut down, and the tax saving is clear. Corrupt contractors not gettting their cut.
Most contractors were uneffected as they already had contracts in place. Maybe a few delayed.
EPA employees still got paid.
