Elian Gonzalez: When Eric Holder Earned His Spurs

I'd wait till he's long gone before attempting to come back.

Napolitano: Tell me, Mr. Holder, why did you not get a court order authorizing you to go in and get the boy (Elian Gonzalez)?

Holder: Because we didn’t need a court order. INS can do this on its own.

Napolitano: You know that a court order would have given you the cloak of respectability to have seized the boy.

Holder: We didn’t need an order.

Napolitano: Then why did you ask the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals for such an order if you didn’t need one?

Holder: [Silence]

Napolitano: The fact is, for the first time in history you have taken a child from his residence at gunpoint to enforce your custody position, even though you did not have an order authorizing it. When is the last time a boy, a child, was taken at the point of a gun without an order of a judge…Unprecedented in American history.”

Holder: “He was not taken at the point of a gun.”

Napolitano: “We have a photograph showing he was taken at the point of a gun.”

Holder: “They were armed agents who went in there who acted very sensitively…”

the now-19-year-old Gonzalez said last weekend during a Union of Young Communists event.

I'll bet Barack was sad to have missed the event!

You don’t get the differences between Cuba and Mexico?

He will never be allowed to leave Cuba, at least till the regime falls.

I'm sure that's true. However, after looking at his picture at the link, maybe that's a good thing. He's one angry dude.

At the time, I thought the US should have simply granted him citizenship and handed him over to the World Court to decide where he should end up. Since he would have citizenship, he could return at any time. In a few years, his eyes will be opened.

Actually, if it wasn’t for Elian Gonzales, I don’t think Bush would have been elected in 2000. The Cuban Community came out strong for Bush as a direct result from this trainwreck.

I don’t judge him negatively because I don’t believe he can freely speak his true feelings

Cubans are legal as soon as they touch US soil. In case you weren’t aware.

Don’t like the law? Change it.

So, if a government wants to KEEP its citizens, you think they should be expatriated. But, if a government wants to EXPORT its citizens illegally to this country, you think we should keep them out. Again, I don’t get the inconsistency.

It’s not a consideration of the type of government, but of our laws of immigration. And please don’t try to contrast Cuba and Mexico. Both are garbage heaps in their own way, with thoroughly corrupt governments. Mexico is every bit as hostile to our way of life as Cuba is.

And, Elian would likely be voting Democrat had he stayed and gain citizenship.

You make an excellent point!

He is now free to live in a communist state for as long as he wishes. His next journey across the pond will not be held so kindly in the freedom loving hearts of Americans.

So, if a government wants to KEEP its citizens,...

Interesting characterization of Cuba, comrade.

They went by the rule of law and returned Elian to his father in Cuba. I'm all for non-citizens being sent home to or with their parents.

Clinton followed the rule of law. He did not pander to the minority community and set a very bad precedent. What's the problem?

Elian’s dad was as much of a puppet as Elian now is in Cuba.

Now do you get it?

Before the clampdown on the dad, there were conversations between the dad and the Miami relatives indicating his desire for Elian to remain and live in America.

It really sickened me that so many “conservatives” called for the return of Elian to his father proving that even conservatives can be clueless about communism.

How is that characterization incorrect, discounting any motivation behind it?

FReepers are often incensed at the practice of anchor babies and illegal immigrant children, and yet, want an illegal immigrant forcefully kept in the U.S., against his father’s wishes no less.

I don’t get it.

What part of escaping-Communism-for-freedom don't you understand?

When all this was going on I happened to read Cuban media occasionally. There was an interesting article there that went into great detail about all the ‘luxuries’ offered to the average Cuban citizen. Including fertility treatment. It seems that little Elian is the result of one of these treatments. Now, the question is,...who’s the daddy.

Look at pictures of Castro when he was a little boy. Now, look at pictures of Elian as a child. Compare/contrast.

Would explain why THIS child, out of the thousands that have escaped over the years, was so important for Castro to have back in Cuba.

Here’s the problem.

President Reagan fought the system and kept the legal process going until a teenage boy from the Ukraine was allowed to remain in the USA.

This boy, Walter Polovchak, now 44 has two sons, ages 18 and 9, and lives with his family in Des Plaines.

Much nicer ending. It’s called Freedom.

So, is "escaping-adject-poverty-for-economic-benefit" then justified by Mexicans?
