GAP delivers early Christmas present to pro-family group

A major U.S. retailer has decided to have a heart for Christmas after a five-year campaign by the American Family Association.

About eight years ago, roughly 80 percent of the nation's retailers ignored the theme of Christmas in their stores and in advertising, choosing instead to use the politically correct terms "Happy Holidays" or "Holiday Sales." According to Randy Sharp, director of special projects for the American Family Association, while there has been a major turnaround among the companies, there have been some holdouts.

"One particularly is GAP, which owns the GAP stores and Old Navy stores all across the nation," he tells OneNewsNow. "We began working with GAP and Old Navy about five years ago when they adamantly refused to use the term 'Christmas' in any of their seasonal advertising."

For that reason, AFA called for a boycott of the stores during the Christmas shopping season last year. It appears the pro-family group's persistence has paid off.

"This week the American Family Association received a personal letter from Bill Chandler, who is the executive vice president for global corporate affairs at GAP Incorporated," states Sharp, "and he is proud to let us know that this year things are different at GAP and Old Navy."

This is a tricky situation. One would like to reward GAP stores for their change of mind, yet unless my memory is faulty, this may not represent a change in heart: they give considerable support to anti-family groups such as gay and lesbian activists and still pitch oversexed products and advertising to young children. I don’t know if that is still the situation, but it is a consideration.
