Pistol Permits Jump After Sandy Hook Shooting [Continuing Trend]

Pistol permit applications in Newtown skyrocketed in the five months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, exceeding the entire totals for both 2011 and 2012.

The Newtown police department was so inundated with pistol permit applications after the shooting that town officials had to hire a part-time clerk to help process the paperwork.

Monte Frank, a board member of the Newtown Action Alliance, a group formed after the Sandy Hook school shooting to press for stronger gun control laws, said that the increase in permit applications in his town did not surprise him.

"What we've seen in Newtown and in other states where there has been a push for new guns laws is that push has caused an increase in permits,'' Frank said.

Frank said that the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, whose headquarters are 3 miles from the Sandy Hook Elementary School, have been "fairly aggressive in their campaign to promote fear in gun owners that new laws will take away their rights.''

Of course, gun control nuts never mention the other reason for the surge in permits- that people realize after mass murders that they are primarily responsible for protecting themselves and their loved ones. They realize that the police cannot be everywhere all of the time protecting everyone. They learn that while help maybe minutes away, deranged people can cause a lot of suffering in those minutes. Suffering that could be limited or stopped by someone on scene who is armed.

However, these realities do not lend themselves to the gun control message.
