HealthCare.gov has performed even worse than expected. Fewer than 27,000 people selected a plan through the website, compared with roughly 79,000 who picked a plan through the 15 state-based insurance exchanges. Unofficial estimates leaked earlier this week suggested the federal website had done slightly better.

Another 396,000 people have been approved for Medicaid benefits, according to HHS.

Only 27,794 Americans managed to push their way through the Obamacare website far enough to pick a commercial health-care plan that could work for them, according to the Obama administration.

That’s far below the goal of 500,000 completed sign-ups envisaged by President Barack Obama’s deputies prior to opening the tangled website.

Overall, 106,185 used the federal or state exchanges to select one of the government-compliant health-care plans for use in 2014, according to a Wednesday statement by the Department of Health and Human Services.
