It goes all the way back to the book of Genesis.
He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyones hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward all his brothers
God’s curse on Yishmael.
Genesis 16:12
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
God put the curse you mentioned on Yishmael and his descendants but also a blessing.
Genesis 17:20
And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
The twelve tribes of Yishmael.

and the world is left with a cult of, by and for men only ,founded by a 6th century pedophile. Marvelous!
I would suggest you spend a little more time with the Hebrew of that chapter. This is a terrible and watered down translation. Worse, Hagar worships the angel and names him "god." The angel does not correct her. That's how we know he is the adversary. It's really quite a study, especially when comparing the structure of roots in comparison to G_d's interactions with Abraham. In many respects, they are almost exactly the same. It is the distinctions among the roots that make said "almost" really interesting, and very nasty.
