Maybe on paper, but in reality you cannot own your own debt. How can you possibly borrow $10,000 from yourself ? For a government it is only possible because they control the value of their fiat money. So they have thrown more dollars into their fiat pie (inflation). A pie which has been getting smaller in size due to lack of economic activity (deflation). We are in a state of limbo I think technically with only a handful of countries willing to risk buying our debt.

I believe China owns 6, maybe 7% of our debt. The Federal Reserve on the other hand (which none of us "own") has a heap load of American debt.
