If you really want to win in the end, and that’s all that counts, politics means going to bed with a lot of women you wouldn’t bring home to meet mother. By not playing the game you automatically lose the game; they win. But if you get enough conservatives in office and you can control the nation’s agenda (be the majority) then you have to hold your nose and occasionally vote to achieve that majority. Take the long view. If you do we’ll eventually end up with the conservatism you want; or some reasonable negotiated approximation you can live with. Otherwise you’re consigning all of us to that hell you’d like to send the GOP to. (BTW, I agree. They can go to Hell...but...)
See, but for me it’s not all about winning at any cost anymore, and it isn’t a game. It’s deadly reality. Will we keep feeding the GOP beast? Will we continue to come running every election cycle like docile abused wives and vote for whatever Dem-lite loser they put up? I won’t. Not again. Besides, the idea that we’ll end up with conservatism by dancing to the GOP’s tune is just wrong. It will never happen.
Also, for those who believe God is real, there’s a spiritual aspect to consider, as well. I prayed long and hard about voting for Romney, with his pro-queer views and his history of supporting abortion. I was quite convicted that God wanted me to sit it out. But I didn’t. When Benghazi happened, I caved, and I gave Romney my vote. The next day-—literally——a distance between God and myself came into being, one I’ve never felt before and one I am still trying to mend.
I’m done holding my nose, and I will not endanger my relationship with God again by lending my support to pseudo-Democrats. I’ll vote for conservatives, certainly, but the compromising is over.
