The Rock

November 9, 2013

On a trip to Massachusetts, my husband and I visited Plymouth Rock, an iconic symbol in the United States. It is traditionally thought to be the place where the Pilgrims, who traveled to America on the Mayflower in 1620, first set foot. While we enjoyed learning about its significance, we were surprised and disappointed that it is so small. We learned that due to erosion and people chipping off pieces, it is now just one-third its original size.

The Bible refers to Jesus as a Rock (1 Cor. 10:4), who never changes (Heb. 13:8). He is the solid Rock on which we can build our lives. The church (the body of believers) is built on a foundation with “Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” In Him all believers are joined together (Eph. 2:20-22).

Jesus is the solid Rock we can cling to when the storms of life blow and beat against us (Matt. 7:25). Writer Madeleine L’Engle said: “It’s a good thing to have all the props pulled out from under us occasionally. It gives us some sense of what is rock under our feet and what is sand.”

Plymouth Rock is an interesting mass of minerals with an intriguing historical significance. But Jesus is a precious cornerstone, and those who trust in Him will always have a solid Rock to depend upon.

O build on the Rock, forever sure,
The firm and true foundation,
Its hope is the hope which shall endure—
The hope of our salvation. —Belden
Christ, the Rock, is our sure hope.

Read: Matthew 7:24-27; Ephesians 2:18-22

Jesus Christ Himself [is] the chief cornerstone. —Ephesians 2:20

There is something that I have to share with all of you: After living with us for 14 years it has suddenly dawned upon me that our dog is an LIV Obembabot who votes solidly democrap!! All she does is eat and sleep. When she is not sleeping or eating then all she does is to complain and bark or to look for free handouts all day, every day!!!!! Should I kick her out and tell her to get a job or should I feel sorry for her and let her keep receiving free hand outs????? ;-)

My Obamacare song: “Another Prick In Us All”

We don’t need no Obamacare.
We don’t need no government control.
No pills for grandma in the exam room.
Hey! Obama! Leave them docs alone.
All in all it’s just another tax on us all.
All in all you’re just another prick in us all.

For four years, Lou Beethoven had put aside the piano sonata to concentrate on other forms. It was an eventful four years with the Napoleonic Wars going on, to include a French invasion of Austria. Lou had written his “Eroica” Symphony to great acclaim and had followed up with the first three versions of his one and only opera, titled “Leonora” at this point. There was the Choral Fantasy, which was a warmup exercise for the Ninth Symphony, which would come over a decade later. There were two trios for piano, violin and cello (Opus 70), and a sonata for cello and piano (Opus 69) where Beethoven set the cello free. Finally there was his Fourth Piano Concerto, in which he finally put to rest the shade of Mozart and defined his own style.

By 1809, Lou was ready to go back to the piano sonata, and he wrote three in a row, two slight but beautiful works, and a major effort. The first of the three sonatas is in six sharps, which is a most unusual key signature for Beethoven. This is the Piano Sonata in F#, Op. 78, the Therese Sonata, named after its dedicatee.

It starts with an adagio cantabile introduction in 2/4, “at rest and singing”, before swinging into an allegro ma non troppo movement in 4/4, “quickly, but not too quickly.” The first subject has a hint of Mozart in its refinement. It takes on a questioning tone that sounds a bit like what Schubert would do in his maturity 15 years later. There is a gentle segue into the second subject in C# Major (7 sharps!). The exposition repeats.
At 3:08, development begins in F# minor, but almost as quickly, it returns to the recap in the correct key. The second subject appears in the correct key of F# Major. Due to its short length, Lou repeats the development and recap.

The finale in 2/4 is marked allegro vivace, “quickly and lively”. This little rondo flows like quicksilver, and before you know it, it’s gone.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in F#, Op. 78
