Zaccureus had a spiritual awakening, he sought out Jesus and THEN he became more Christian and VOLUNTEERED to give half his money to the poor.
BTW, the only true, “communal” societies that ever worked were voluntary small groups based on Christianity..the monks and the convents...and that because their strong spiritual faith they worked on every day in their small communities witheach other to change the natural inclinations of man.

He also stated he would pay back anyone he cheated 4 times that amount. It wasn’t that he “BECAME MORE” Christian, by his actions, he showed he had become a Christian...or as Christ said , “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
