Sugary drinks tax (20%!) 'effective public health measure'
BBC ^ | Oct 31, 2013 | BBC

A 20% tax on sugary drinks would reduce the number of obese adults in the UK by 180,000, say researchers writing in the British Medical Journal.

Earlier this year doctors called for a soft drinks tax to reduce sugar intake.

The impact would be greatest in the under-30s, the Oxford and Reading university study suggests.

But some groups say a tax is misguided and simplistic, and would not have an impact on older age groups who might benefit most from losing weight.

Naturally, taxes are the answer to everything.... (/sarc)

Why doesn't the government just keep our money in the first place, then provide us with the kind of food, housing, cars they deem appropriate... (more sarcasm - but this is where all this is going...)

Just wait until we will have taxes on candy, meat, and anything else Obama and Michelle want us to not eat, to be “healthier” to make Obamacare “more affordable”...

The “gay lifestyle” is by far more unhealthily than a straight lifestyle.

Why can’t we tax that?

Oh - because it is not about health...

US States should slap a heavy tax on sodas and sweets.

Why?

Because it would turn food stamps into state revenue!
Yes, they’d be taxing the federal govt LOL!

And working people could just avoid buying them.

Same with lottery tickets, booze and cigarettes. Let the food stampers buy them with their federal handout and put the money in the general fund

Now it is Big Sugar. First Big Tobacco. Big Burgers. Now Big Sugar. Just another way for government to milk citizens pockets for more money to waste. They don’t give a tinkers damned how many people die. Obamacare proves that!!! The more ways they can find to milk us, the more for them. Big Tobacco. Big Sugar. Big Burgers. Big Oil. Big Gas Miles Driven. Big Sports Watching. Big Anger over Losing Ball Games. Big Car Wash. Big Walmart. It will all just keep coming. More and more. Robbery by government.

They could see that taxes increase the price of something, thus the reduction of its use, yet fail to see that increasing taxes of work means less work

If I lived in any place so presumptuous, I’d view it as a moral imperative to offer only sugar-free versions of beverages along with complimentary finely ground sugar as a condiment. On second thought, no, keep the sugary ones as well because it’s fun to watch liberals fleece each other!

Tax the sugar drink, manufacturer makes drink without sugar to avoid the tas. Consumer adds own sugar. How does that work out?

The communists sure are creative when it comes to finding new ways to steal the people’s money. It sounds like the Beatles’ “Taxman”.

Why can’t they just mind their own frickin business.

Even if people’s food and drink choices were the government’s business, there is not a shred of evidence that drinking soda causes obesity, or that replacing soda with other high-sugar drinks like milk or fruit juice would have any impact on calorie consumption.

If only losing weight were as simple as ceasing to drink soda. I would be rail thin... I rarely drink soda, and when I do, it is because there is no alternative.
