I might be slow but what does the Purple Heart have to do with this? Are they implying that there is something wrong with military people who have been awarded the Purple Heart?

I think the purpose of mentioning his military honor is to point out the unbelievably large gap between his public and private persona. One expects recipients of Purple Hearts to have a higher standard of behavior. It is shocking when we find cases where they fall so beneath our expectation.
I don’t know but there’s definitely something wrong with one of them.
