I think it's as simple as the so-called "Greatest Generation" wanting to spare their kids the horrors and rigors they endured during WWII.
They went too far.
Right on! The Greatest Generation out of a proper sense of sparing the Boomers, the pain of the Depression, WWII and the Cold War, over pampered their kids who then, of course, revolted. Now they want their cake and eat it too, just like always.
