I handled a firearm exactly one time over 5 years while in the Navy and that was in boot camp. No need to any other time since I was in a technical field.

Well, I guess that’s all we’ll be hearing on the failures of Obamacare, huh?

This was actually work place violence. I live in the area and one o my boys is an officer stationed on the base. Probably wasn't a Navy recruiter that did the shooting, if the story is true about him being disciplined by the National Guard. There is a recruiting command on the base, but I don't think that actual recruiting is done there. Also the National Guard is actually on the Nzvy base. The rent-a-cops on the gates never check for fire arms even though signs say no weapons.

I handled a firearm exactly one time over 5 years while in the Navy and that was in boot camp. No need to any other time since I was in a technical field. And those firearms were .22's. We did have several onboard who were armed. One Supply {Storekeeper} who went around collecting the reciepts from the ship stores, the Dp's in the check cashing line, and MARDET. With MARDET armed responses were very fast. LOL.
On Subs while in port I think Petty Officers on Watch at the brow is or was armed with a sidearm. The military in all branches needs to go back to being it's own security.

I remember the Marines guarding the personnelmen handing out pay while at sea. I wonder where anyone would go if they were stupid enough to rob the pay clerk on payday.

Did they not have enough “No firearms allowed” signs posted? /s

I have a coworker that served as pay clerk for a marine unit on Okinawa. He said the first thing he did was report to the armory for his 1911A2 before picking up the cash and it stayed on him until he was done disbursing.

I remember the Marines guarding the personnelmen handing out pay while at sea. I wonder where anyone would go if they were stupid enough to rob the pay clerk on payday. Back then it was doubtful. That's not to say some didn't try rather stupid acts. One guy drove a forklift off the flightdeck in port. One guy went through the aft mess decks with a burning cross. One guy in Fire Dept a Satanist liked to hold rituals at his rack. One guy on flightdeck crew won the most stupid stunt award. We pulled out of St Thomas, VI and that evening the ship went to Flight Quarters. After that came the Man Overboard whistle. They found gear with his name but not him. They searched all night and part of the next day then suspended the search and let the smaller ships continue looking.
We got back to Norfolk and the Captain had a surprise announcement. Seems the clown talked a buddy into tossing his gear and reporting him overboard. He caught a commercial flight home from St Thomas. The Navy sent the notification team to his parents home and told his mother he was missing at sea. She said no he's not he's in the living room watching TV. How dumb can you be? LOL. Now that is stupid's stupid LOL.
The last one was tragic and cost the guy his life. We were pulling in to Norfolk in early 1977 and it was raining and fog. Evidently a guy had gotten a Dear John Letter and jumped overboard somewhere off Virginia Beach. His body was located a few days later.

I tried early on to set the trend to blame the ammonites.
The shell shape is reminiscent of a muslim's turban.
And they are, like I hope the muslims will soon be, extinct.
But I ended up having to go with the flow.
