David Cameron will this week demand the return of powers from Brussels amid new evidence of the massive cost of EU regulation to Britain.
A report published today by the Open Europe think-tank claims that the top 100 EU regulations are costing the UK more than £27 billion a year, outweighing benefits in a quarter of cases.
Annual figures for the five costliest EU regulations are capital rules for banks at £4.5 billion; the Working Time Directive, £4.1 billion; the EU Climate and Energy Package, £3.4 billion; the Temporary Agency Workers Directive, £2 billion; and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, £1.5 billion.

Central government, with crushing regulations and mandates eventually ruins the quality of everything. Just look at the federal government of US states. It’s a monster.
He regularly takes Brussels to task. You wouldn't believe how, uh, articulate and direct he can be when he speaks. A real treat.
He's apparently leading a party called UKIP. I'm just an interested American living in Las Vegas, but the similarities between what he has been fighting against and what the TEA Party are up against are virtually identical.
Hence, we can learn from each other. International Socialism does a very efficient job at communicating with its foreign branches at various conferences, private communications, etc., but conservatives tend to operate with consulting across borders to the same degree.
It's time we communicate and establish links.
