Two points. One, never get out of the car. Two, drive over them. I'm not so sure about the drive over them part, but your advice is basically very sound. If you find yourself in a mob situation, you must get moving and keep moving.
That's the main reason I ALWAYS keep a car length open in front of me when I stop at red lights. If I gotta pull suddenly, I'll need that space.

It helps to drive something that if tapped by a car doesn't do much other than scratch the paint. Preferably you want something with 20 or 22.5" tires but 24.5" would be better for ground clearance. Don't forget the gun rack.
