I’ve long defended Cruz from birther venom, and swore I would vote for him, but now I need to see that he’s interested in more than getting his name in the papers.

Did you mean that Senator Cruz should have done his defense of the Constitution in a way some other Republican (or Democrat) has done it recently?
Is there a particular figure he should be looking to as a role model? that does seem to be your point.
