Conservatives have been telling the GOP for years and DECADES that you got to FIGHT these people on the left....Make your STAND! That's all that it takes!

I mean the GOP had the perfect opportunity to take the battle to the left defending the Boy Scouts from the queers and they refused to take the fight to them. For heavens sake, if you can't win election with something like that, then you're just plain hopeless!

The GOP is supposed to be the mom and apple pie of American politics, patriotic, defender of defense, pro small govt, pro-life, por-marriage, all things that reverberate with Main Street, USA!

I got involved in the Libertarian Party in the late 80's. There were 3 basic groups: Randians (even though Ayn Rand called libertarians 'right-wing hippies' and opposed the LP), the second group were Goldwaterites, folks who were teenagers or college students who worked for Goldwater and everyone else.

In 1976, afters years in the wilderness, conservatives fought again to wrest control from the moderates when Gov. Ronald Reagan primaried the sitting Republican president. Reagan lost, and his efforts contributed to President Gerald Ford’s defeat and President Jimmy Carter’s win, but he caught the nation’s imagination and stoked that fire that Goldwater had lit.

I assume that the Republicans in that era blamed the conservatives for Ford's defeat. Like today, they probably whined and moaned about how the conservatives "had a hissy fit and stayed home," instead of manning up and acknowledging the fact that picking a candidate because "it's his turn" is a losing strategy - not to mention the fact that a candidate that's acceptable to the wealthy blue-blood Rockefeller Republicans probably isn't acceptable to the Bible-believing, pro-life, pro-gun rubes in flyover country they sneer at.
