Bob Schieffer Hammers GOP Rep.: You’re ‘Plunging Off into the Unknown’ to Stop Obamacare
mediaite.com ^ | October 13, 2013

Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer interrogated Representative Tim Huelskamp (R-KA) on the House Republicans’ tactics to shutdown the government and test the breaching of the debt ceiling, challenging Huelskamp to name what, if anything, such measures had accomplished or were intended to accomplish.

“At the end of the day, what we have accomplished?” Huelskamp said. “Not much yet. But we have to focus on Obamacare, and we have to focus on the underlying problem that’s been ignored for years, and that’s too much spending.”

“But congressman, don’t you have to focus on keeping the government running?” Schieffer asked.

When Hueslkamp responded by attacking spending again, Schieffer interrupted him. “I think you’ve got a problem that may be worse than all of that, which is that if the government has to default on its debts, and the term ‘the full faith and credit of the United States government’ is no longer operative, we’re going to plunge off into the unknown. Nobody knows what the impact of that will be, on not just our economy but the world economy. Would you be willing to let that happen to postpone Obamacare—which you haven’t been able to do?”

“There are no payments due on October 17 to pay our creditors, there are no payments due until November 15, that’s why Moody’s has indicated there will be no major impact here,” Huelskamp said.

“That is not what the Secretary of the Treasury says,” Schieffer said.

“He said a lot of things a week ago,” Huelskamp said. “I think the White House is trying to scare the markets. I think that’s unfortunate.”

Schieffer is an idiot.

How many unknown pages in the ACA bill? Did Schieffer read it? Can he comprehend it?

Schieffer is an idiot.

If it’s so damn important, Bob, why doesn’t Obama raise it short-term to avoid the “crisis”?

Because he won’t budge an inch for any reason that’s why. He’ll happily take us over any cliff without blinking if he doesn’t get his way.

Someday these assinine media dogs will realize what they’ve done when it’s too late to stop it.

When we elect them to the House, that *is* their two-year mission. To boldly go and repeal Obamacare

Funny, I thought that failing to pass an annual budget for the first time was "plunging off into the unknown."

Little did I know that the unknown included doing it again four more times.

But now, we're plunging. Not then. Now.

The Republicans do not know how to defend their position.

There is no need to default. We have the money. We can pay those bills -- although Obama may spitefully decide not to, and thus push a kind of self-destruct button. It's his choice.

Spending originates in the House.
The House has passed multiple bills to keep the government open.
We fund everything except Obamacare.
The crisis is 100% because Obama is trying to usurp the power granted to the House in the Constitution.

Schieffer is repeating liberal talking points.

I’m sure he’s never interrogated Reid/Pelosi so.

“But congressman, don’t you have to focus on keeping the government running?” Schieffer asked.

Why, Bob? Why?

Reportedly, 83% of the government is running now. Is that not enough for you?

Even 83% is more government than we need.

The federal government shutdown in 1996 occurred, and the people went on with their business, the military went on with its business, and the media whined and moaned, as is it’s business.

This federal government only knows how to keep writing checks it cannot ocver, not has any desire to cover.

Throw all the bums out.

Long Live The Republic!

Very good point! This, however, has morphed into something other than ObamaCare and what it's morphed into is still a win-win situation for the conservatives if only they hold their ground.

The President refuses to negotiate and feels he can stop the shutdown and even raise the debt ceiling without negotiating with the House. THIS is what it's morphed into.

And also a good point. To help keep the focus, the House should continue to offer bills to fund everything but the ACA.

Au contraire — the dimcrats plunged into the unkown by foisting bomb-o-care on us in the first place, by hook and crook, in the dead of night, unread, no republican votes, dripping with bribes. That’s plunged into the unknown, and that’s what this is all about.

It’s really extraordinary how pitiful the media is. Worse than ever, which is no small accomplishment. It’s really almost understandable in a way why the GOP always rolls over with this kind of false narrative that is always - always - generated by the media. Did Bob Schieffer equally put a Democrat through the ringer with the same amount of time over Obamacare and report about skyrocketing premiums and how many people are being displaced who already had healthcare? Did he ask why can’t we come up with something that helps those genuinely in need without displacing everyone else? Etc. Of course not.

I would suggest defunding the ACA by restoring the funds it took from Medicare and put them back in Medicare. See what the Democrats have to say about that.

Did Schieffer read it?

Good point that no one else seems to be making when talking to the MSM. It is actually a quasi-Hobbesian choice between Obamacare and federal belt tightening.
