DISCOVERING GOD

Tomorrow many will enjoy a day off to celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus day is a legal holiday that we, as North Americans along with Latin Americans, celebrate the landing of Columbus in the Bahamas in 1492. Because of this discovery, a country, the United States of America, would come into existence based upon a pursuit of God Jehovah and the right to worship as we please.

"Admiral Byrd, the explorer, one day was passing through the lobby of a hotel when a large company of people commenced cheering him. Two men were joining in the salutation, when one was overheard remarking to the other: 'He is the last of the explorers; there is nothing left for the rest of us to explore."

Little did they realize that as we face a new millennium we would be standing on the edge of discovering new worlds and the world in which we live. The same can be said of God. We might think we know the story and everything there is in our relationship with the Creator of all that is to be discovered, but spiritually, we have just begun to see and know what God can be and do in our lives.

It all tends to come into focus when you are standing on the top of the Rocky mountains at night looking out into space at the stars that are as numerous as the sands of the sea, or on the bow of a ship when the moon is cutting a path before you in the blackened waters of an endless ocean. You begin to understand how little we know about the mysteries of God when you hold a newborn child as the morning sun's rays break through your window, bathing you in the newness of a new day.

As the Queen of Sheba said of Solomon's Kingdom, "But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me....". We only know in part. So, let us purpose to discover, see for ourselves, and know more of the God that lives within us and begin to claim His many promises for us. Let us, by faith, sail the old ship of salvation into the horizon of the Holy Word and find a greater love and knowledge of our God and Messiah.

Remember, "...we are all in the same boat with Christopher Columbus. He didn't know where he was going when he started. When he got there he didn't know where he was, and when he got back he didn't know where he had been." The moral of the story being, "Just do it." God will bless you in your spiritual journey and you will always find Him there.

CAPT Jerry McNabb, CHC, USN

God made this land and we discovered it. The Pilgrims discovered our freedom. Millions of people form all walks of life discovered Gods continent. We have let it slip out of our hands and need to find God again and bring his continent back to Him.

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

Facing Our Past

October 13, 2013

Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship, spent 40 years helping people hear and understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. When he died in April 2012, one newspaper article carried the headline, “Charles Colson, Nixon’s ‘dirty tricks’ man, dies at 80.” It seemed surprising that a man so transformed by faith should be identified with things he did as a politically ruthless presidential aide decades earlier before he knew the Savior.

The apostle Paul’s conversion and his early Christian witness were greeted with skepticism and fear. When he began preaching that Jesus is the Son of God, people said, “Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose?” (Acts 9:21). Later when Paul went to Jerusalem and tried to join the disciples, they were afraid of him (v.26). In years to come, Paul never ignored his past, but spoke of it as evidence of the mercy of God (1 Tim. 1:13-14).

Like Paul, we don’t need to parade our failures or to pretend they didn’t happen. Instead, we can thank the Lord that through His grace and power, our past is forgiven, our present is changed, and our future is bright with hope for all He has prepared for us.

Transformed by grace divine,
The glory shall be Thine;
To Thy most holy will, O Lord,
We now our all resign. —Burroughs
Only Jesus can transform our life.

Read: Acts 9:20-30

He tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. —Acts 9:26

Two out of three couldn’t make it today.

So I just went to the Range instead.

Then I rode my Bike and went out for sushi buffet.

I am celebrating my birthday a few days early.

We will have an hour after set-up tomorrow before the service, so we’ll be OK.
