Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise seized after drugs found on board

MOSCOW, October 9 (RAPSI) - Greenpeace activists on trial for maritime piracy in Russia soon may face new charges after drugs were found at the Arctic Sunrise ship, Investigative Committee's official spokesperson Vladimir Markin told journalists on Wednesday.

Markin added that the investigators have secured an official court order to seize the ship. Earlier, 30 members of the crew were charged with maritime piracy. "With this new evidence that came to light during the investigation, the charges against the accused will be augmented accordingly. It is very clear to the investigation that a number of participants will be chraged with other serious crimes," Markin said.

The Arctic Sunrise ship was seized by Russian border guards on September 19 in international waters, within Russia's exclusive economic zone, a day after two Greenpeace activists scaled the Prirazlomnaya drilling rig in the Pechora Sea, the southeastern part of the Barents Sea. Greenpeace claimed that the ship was held under armed guard.

The platform, owned by Gazprom Neft Shelf, a subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom, is the first ice-resistant stationary oil platform in the world set to produce offshore Arctic oil.

Greenpeace and other environmental groups oppose drilling for oil in the Arctic because they say that it is currently impossible to sufficiently clean up potential oil spills in the region, and that such drilling cannot be economically viable without state subsidies.

Don’t really matter to the Russians. They got some comfy gulags just waiting for these asshats in Siberia. Hopefully they’ll never be heard from again. I know, I know. They are someones sister/brother/aunt/uncle/mom/dad/cousin etc. Act like a fool, get treated like a fool. I think they should have done to the boat what the French did many years ago. Deep six it.

If GP crew were told to leave the weed home before embarking on a trip to Russia, none would go.

Greenpeace has learned a valuable lesson, which is

Never bother the Russians or Chinese, regardless of how egregiously “anti-environmental” they are.

Stick to protesting countries like the USA, UK, Netherlands. After you get arrested, you get bail and you get feted as “heros” by other leftists in Government and media. Much better than a Russian jail cell.

The presence or absence of drugs probably wouldn't make much difference to the Russians. They wouldn't bother to plant the drugs if they wanted to charge them. They'd just charge them and who cares about the evidence in a Russian court.

I’ll not lose any sleep over it either way. These people are pretty stupid to think that all countries will treat them with the kid gloves that the U.S. and Great Britain use.

Reminds me of the old observation about Gandhi -- If your opponent is the British Empire, then nonviolent resistance may be an excellent strategy and you may embarass your opponent into submission. On the other hand, if your opponent is the Third Reich, this strategy may be less successful.

If Greenpeace wants to make the US or Australia or New Zealand adopt certain policies, they may have see some success. If their target is Russia -- "Oh, look. We found some drugs. Now your boat is ours. Enjoy your prison stay."
