I am a biker of 15 years in NYC and as far as I can see Mieses had it coming to him (sorry friends and family) as well as every other idiot biker who threatens the well being of others. This tragedy (Lien) could have been averted if the Mayor, chief of police, and representatives of motorcycles got together a long time ago to address the Wild West situation of bikers in NYC. I lived in Harlem and now Inwood and in both communities menacing biker idiots are given free rein. There are packs of kids riding illegally, mini-bikes, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, no helmets, no mufflers, incredibly loud, racing around where ever they want and aggressively. The message is loud and clear to idiots like Cruz and his comrades: you can get away with it in NYC.
Without exaggeration I have logged well over 100 calls to precincts to ask them to crack down on aggressive bikers that disturb the peace and in 15 years I have witnessed only one intervention as plain-clothed policemen drag down some kids on dirt bikes—glorious as it was. I cringe to think of how many other peoples calls are routinely ignored because as the prevailing wisdom goes, by the time they get a squad car on it, the bikers are gone. I even went to the community meetings at the precinct about this issue and the boiler plate NYPD response was: it poses too many risks to others if they pursue.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that if we really wanted to manage the biker situation we could. This whole thing is just a serious failure of leadership and action of City Government. NYC should be prepared to close down streets and to surround and incarcerate packs of aggressive bikers. NYC needs to deter the biker idiots and bullies and at the same time recognize motorcycles as legitimate modes of transportation worthy of the protection and conveniences afforded to cars and trucks.
Mieses and friends are in a ‘club’ known as the HOLLYWOOD STUNTZ.
And you are correct, they have been doing this for a while now.
