A friend of mine lives in the Gary-Calumet Region (for those outside Indiana, it’s simply known as “The Region”). He said one night in Gary a shoe store was robbed; somebody threw a concrete block through the window. Gary PD rolled up in response to the alarm and the first thing the cops did was fill the trunks of their squad cars with shoes.

My in-laws live in Munster. According to them, you don't go anywhere near Gary. It is the Detroit of northern Indiana.

Stories of firemen doing the same in the underground mall on 9/11 floated around as well; I believe the NYFD said the stack of denim jeans was blown into the firetruck from which they were later recovered (no kidding).
