Yes, “foraging” at the local Aldis is usually less expensive then the PX/BX.

Now, the Class 6 (alcohol) store being affected would be something different. And isn’t that what we’re really talking about here?

And many don’t know that we pay a service fee on our commissary bills...

what is “untruthful” about considering all military compensation as “federal welfare” and therefore on the same level as handouts to people who contribute nothing?

Disingenuous is a better term for what you are saying.

Active duty and retiree benefits are part of a compensation package; given as payment for services rendered. It does go to the welfare of the individual; it's cost to the individual is far from free, though.

Federal "Welfare", whether individual, or in the form of subsidies to businesses, non profit, etc is largesse, plain and simple. It is given as a a gift, or favor. It costs the receiver nothing, and when it comes from the government, it doesn't cost the bestower anything, as well.

Are they overseas? Everyone has to eat. There are stores outside the AAFES world and prices are usually competitive. The only advantage I ever saw in the AAFES Commisary was in VAT countries, such as GE, where local taxes were avoided. But even then the SOFAs usually allow a reimbursement of taxes.

If I may add: inability to build up home equity because of moving; no consistency in medical care; instability in education to name a few more.
But we knew that going in and felt serving and enduring these burdens was worth it...the benefits just helped ease the sacrifice.

It’s actually a pretty ugly system where they use veteran benefits to try to lead vets into just another ‘taker’ voting block.

There have been hundreds of thousands of ‘nonessential’ VA employees put on furlough.

“Different pots of money. Commissaries take federal welfare, golf courses are self funded. Huge difference.”

Exactly. And if I were back in the military, I would “forage” (brother!) for my food at the grocery stores, just like the rest of the population, and be grateful there was food available.

I am kinda hoping the NEX will extend its food items to include bread and milk alongside the snack stuff etc

Wont be as cheap as commisaary but at least will be on base where people can access it

Its surprising how many military families depend on base facilities for lack of cars or gas

I feel ill in my stomach for the commissary employees now furloughed with no back pay, many are older people, retired vets, and some handicapped

after shopping there for almost 20 years they seem like friends

Not my point AT ALL!
While this crap is going on, there are ways (hopefully, temporary) to ease it.
Cool your jets there, sparky!

To be fair, Obama and his people often lie about their plans.

100% of liberal politicians lie. It is the nature of liberalism. People are just too dumb to sift through the bs.

They are in Hawaii. The prices are extremely high at grocery stores. Shoot, I think the commissary prices are crazy, but they are understandable. We have had a number of friends who have been stationed there as officers. They had plenty of compensation and could afford to shop wherever. The wives made sure to stress to our daughter that she needed to walk as much as possible and to live within walking distance to the commissary and to avoid shopping at local grocery stores due to the costs.

Ok, that explains it. I’d have faith in the wives club. They will get the ear of the base commander starting with his wife who is their representative. I suspect the NEX will reopen shortly thereafter.

Comparing grocery stores and golf courses is pretty lame. But this does not change the unfairness of this scam (see last two paragraphs.)

“The Army & Air Force Exchange Service (Exchange) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense. Its dual missions are to provide quality merchandise and services of necessity and convenience to authorized customers at uniform low prices, and to generate reasonable earnings to supplement appropriated funds for the support of United States Army and Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs.

“The Navy operates the equivalent Navy Exchange (NEX), while the Marine Corps operates the Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) and the United States Coast Guard operates the Coast Guard Exchange (CGX).

“A non-appropriated fund instrumentality (NAFI) of the Department of Defense, the Exchanges fund 98% of their operating budget, including civilian employee salaries, inventory investments, utilities and capital investments for equipment, vehicles and facilities, from the sale of merchandise, food and services to customers.”

“The only congressionally appropriated money spent in the Exchanges comes in the form of utilities and transportation of merchandise to overseas exchanges and for salaries of U.S. military personnel assigned to the Exchange.”
