Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) offered to open negotiations on tax reform Wednesday if Republicans agree to a clean resolution to reopen the government.

Reid sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) pledging to appoint negotiators to a budget conference if House Republicans relent on a six-week funding stopgap.

I will forever remember when George “read my lips, no new taxes” Bush, reluctantly agreed with the Democrats, and good ol’ buddy, Tip O'Neill that he would sign legislation raising taxes if they would send a bill cutting spending by some multiplier of the tax amount. Bush lived up to the agreement, the Democrats did not. Bush was beaten at the next election.
