(CNSNews.com) – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is soliciting applications for federal grants worth up to $275,000 to research ways to provide elderly patients with “palliative care” – even in hospital emergency rooms and intensive care units.

Palliative care is commonly understood to mean medical treatment that focuses on relieving symptoms, including pain, instead of trying to treat or cure the underlying disease.

But researchers will not be studying the use of palliative care to relieve the suffering of dying patients. “Hospice and end-of-life settings are not included within the scope” of the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the grant notices specifically state.

Instead, they will be looking at new ways to provide elderly patients with palliative care long before they are at death’s door.

The palliative care will be provided in “a variety of settings, including ambulatory care, hospitals (and specific sites within hospitals including specialty wards, intensive care units and emergency departments), assisted living facilities, and short- and long-term care facilities.”

Keep Granny doped up and she won’t grouse about the cat food she’s being served.

Sheesh.

Things are not looking good for the useless eaters and enemies of the state.

For what is a man , but to serve Ceaser.

The fundamental flaw in Obama care is that people who pay the same or even more into ObamaCare may receive lesser care and access to treatment based on some bureaucrats arbitrary decision on the persons “usefulness” to society

This is a breach of basic fairness

Death Panels need palliative care, not patients.

Uh-huh.

Give Grandma a big ol' shot of morphine. What's that? She's not breathing? Oh. Well ... I guess it was just her time.

If you take Grandma to the ER are told they will give her Comfort Care, do not think they are worried about Grandma’s pain. They want Grandma to die.

Why spend money helping someone get better when they can be drugged and in pain for 15 or 20 years?

This is Obama's way of making the elderly beg for death panels.... Oh and elderly 'liberal elites'? They'll get the best care possible - just like they're getting exemptions to ObamaCare.

Sarah’s DEATH PANELS ARE REAL, I suggest you get a copy of Damaged Care the story of the HMO’s death panels. It is available on Netfix and Amazon.

cat food might taste better than that ENSURE they force them to eat or drink. Nasty stuff, my dying mother refused it, we found she would take slim fast at least it was some tasteful nutrition. She did Hospice the doctor found the cancer to late gave her 6 months, might get a few more weeks with chemo, but she would still die, and have that horrid treatment to go through, she said no. It made no since. If she could have been saved it would have been worth a go at.

My DIL just had a mascetomy for a stage 3 cancer and they give her 85% chance of recovery with treatment which begins 10/30.

I hope your DIL does well, I pray for her recovery. My mother had a mastectomy for Stage III inflammatory breast cancer too. Prior to that, she has chemo, it took a lot of the redness out but didn't shrink it much. Once the wound heals, she will go back on chemo as a precaution. The breast surgeon said that they tested the surrounding areas and they were negative for cancer spreading. That was a huge concern, the tumor was 22.4 pounds. So I've been there too.

No study is needed. They just need to talk to Ben Bernanke. He’s been treating the symptoms of economic disease for years while ignoring the causes.
