This is the only card that Obama can play now - make the public feel as much pain as possible, so they’ll want government back.
The worst thing for Obama is if the public doesn’t feel much impact from the shutdown, then they might realize how much they can do without it, and might actually get the idea of cutting some of it back.
If that ever occurs, the Democratic Party - whose whole premise is based on big-government-dependency - is dead.
Ergo, the clumsy maximum-pain strategy. Will the public be fooled?
