Detroit-area members of Congress react to 'rampant rascality' over looming shutdown and Obamacare

DETROIT, MI -- Members of Congress from Metro Detroit reacted strongly to weekend developments in the budget battle that threatens a Tuesday government shutdown, with U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn) using the harshest words.

“This once-deliberative body has been taken over by knaves and know-nothings, content with putting partisan politics ahead of the American people," Dingell said in a statement.

The Republican-controlled House approved legislation early Sunday that would fund the government through Dec. 15 while delaying Obamacare for one year.

Senate Democrats rejected the proposal before the House even voted and the president has threatened a veto.

Without passage of a regular appropriations bill, government agencies could shut down on Oct. 1. The House also unanimously passed a measure that would ensure U.S. troops would continue to be paid in the event of a shutdown.

“House Democrats stand ready to pass a clean government funding bill... House Republicans must end their rampant rascality and put their party on a path to at least appearing is if they know what they’re doing," said Dingell. "This embarrassment must end, and we must do the job the American people have rightfully demanded we do.”

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-Harrison Twp.) said the House is looking to protect the nation from "job-killing" measures in Obamacare.

"I was proud to vote in favor of a CR (Continuing Resolution) which once again fully funds the federal government, repeals the job killing medical device tax created by ObamaCare, and delays the implementation of ObamaCare for one year," Miller said in a statement. "The U.S. House has once again acted in a bipartisan manner and responded to the calls of the American people to keep the government open and protect them from the ObamaCare train wreck."

There have been 17 government funding gaps and shutdowns since 1976, according to the Associated Press. The gaps ranged from one to 21 days.

The last major shutdown occurred in late 1995 and early 1996, when the economy was relatively strong.

"Shutting down the government is wrong for Michigan, but instead of working toward a practical solution, the vote today plays politics with our servicemen and women and our middle class," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters in his statement on the developments.

He said a shutdown could cause delays in Social Security checks, veterans’ benefits claims, passport and visa applications and small business and home mortgage lending processes.

“I have voted to fix the health care law and will continue to work to improve health care so it works for Michigan families and small businesses, but I cannot join this irresponsible attempt to shut down the government," Peters said.

U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, (R-Milford) supported delaying the Affordable Care Act as a condition of passing a continuing resolution, calling House Republicans "the last line of defense against the wayward liberals in the Senate and White House."

Kerry Bentivolio has been pretty impressive. They said you could never elect a conservative to the right of McCotter in that district.

Gary Peters needs to be hammered on this since he’s running to fill Levin’s seat. He’s trying to play moderate middle of the road games and needs to get run over.

The Dingell Fam Plantation, owned by the Dingells for ~80 years now principally contains the Muzzie enclave West of Detroit and the Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor. It really has NOTHING to do with Detroit, but could easily be more leftist.

"Dingell's district was first in western Detroit, but redistricting has successively moved him further into the city's western suburbs.[citation needed] Since 2013, he has represented Michigan's 12th congressional district."

"Dingell was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Grace (née Bigler) and John D. Dingell, Sr. (1894–1955), who represented Michigan's 15th district from 1933 to 1955."

"In 1955, John, Sr. died and John, Jr. won a special election to succeed him. He won a full term in 1956 and has been reelected 29 times, including runs in 1988 and 2006 with no Republican opponent."

Talk about slavery....

"the right of McCotter"

The whole presence of McCotter in Congress was somewhat strange.

I believe in Santa Claus but not in (in)Sanity Clause (0bama).

McCotter is a likeable guy but pretty moderate in some respects.

What’s really funny is that not one of these congressmen are metro Detroit congressmen. That would be John Conyers who isn’t even mentioned.

"In 1955, John, Sr. died and John, Jr. won a special election to succeed him.

I propose a Constitutional amendment that bars a relative from filling any elective office vacated by the death, infirmity or removal of an office holder until after a non-relative has served the remainder of that term plus another full term subsequent to the vacancy.

Dingell did support the 2nd and the auto industry for a couple of decades, but as the ‘rats have gone beyond Commie, he has been a fellow traveler.
