The Senate and President were not supposed to be directly elected by “the people” either. The state legislatures got the shaft, but they have only themselves to blame because they ratified the 17th Amendment.

We should split the kid and get a CA to allocate each State's Senator selections between the State Legislature(s) and the People.
One Senator each.
6-yr terms with the State Legislator selected Senator removable before end of term with a 66 or 75% vote.
