Senate defeats Cruz filibuster, passes bill that funds Obamacare
The Washington Times ^ | September 27, 2013 | Stephen Dinan

Senators from both parties linked arms to defy Sen. Ted Cruz, overcoming his attempt to filibuster the stopgap spending bill, which allowed Democrats to add back in full funding for Obamacare and power the bill through the chamber.

The 79-19 vote saw 25 Republicans join with all Democrats to advance the bill, easily overcoming Mr. Cruz and his allies who had argued this was the key point that would determine whether major parts of President Obama’s health care law take effect next week.

Once that hurdle was cleared, the rest of the votes were preordained. The Senate waived budget rules, voted to strip out the Obamacare defunding on a 54-44 party line vote, and passed the bill.

The bill now heads back to the House, where Republicans are struggling to figure out a path forward, trapped between a right wing which insists on full defunding and Senate Democrats, who just proved that stance cannot succeed.

“This is like the movie ‘High Noon. The two sides are walking down the street. I just hope that like the movie ‘High Noon,’ I hope the good guys win,” said Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat who accused Mr. Cruz and his allies of being anarchists, hoping to destroy government altogether.

He said the country is facing a situation “every bit as dangerous” as the lead-up to the Civil War....

First, we as a Nation need to get down on our knees and as for HIS forgiveness.

I prefer a Government that doesn’t get to high and mighty, so suggesting “upward” to a politician might get us right back in the fix we are now it.

I believe there are 46 Republican Senators. Which 2 voted NOT to defund Obamacare?

Well insofar as “all the world’s a stage” and the proceedings of Congress should be out in the public domain for consumption of the citizenry, I suppose you could call what Cruz did “theater.”

Then again, people do enjoy all different sorts of theater —Musical, Kabuki, Classical— the problem is now that we have a literal Greek tragedy taking place, and we’re hard pressed to find public servants who merit the title and stand up for how the country was founded. I hope Cruz is one of these individuals, not just another “player”…

Once again, I see Alabama as the only state doing the right thing.

God bless you, Mister Session—and even Richard Shelby, who is growing a pair.

No. You are honest and honestly believe in Cruz. I can no longer do so with regard to any politician. I have 53 years experience with them.

I don’t “believe” in him, I place a bit of hope in him, just as I do Sarah Palin. He may let me down. I also have 53 years of dealing with these people. A county supervisor candidate in California “forgot” to pay me for handing out leaflets during a parade in the 1960’s. A neighbor girl wrote a letter-to-the-editor in the kid’s section of the area newspaper about his goof-up and all of a sudden he was at my house with the money. LOL

As for Chief Justice Roberts, I’m 97% sure they were either holding his children hostage or threatened his family during that case. I’ve heard too many rumors about it from the “intelligence community” to brush it off as some Alex Jones/David Icke conspiracy.

Cornhole (TX) is gonna pay.

No, he won't. (And even if he did, he'd still be RICHER THAN YOU ARE!)

Hot damn! Though I hate that the bill passed, I'm very glad to se both of my senators, Crapo and Risch, voted against it. They did as their constituents asked, so I'm going to send them both thank-you notes.

Those other 25 turncoats now own Obamacare.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Thank you.

And let’s communicate our thanks to the no voters:

Once again, The 19 Rep who voted no on cloture:
Vitter,Paul,Lee,Cruz,Crapo,Enzi,Fischer,Roberts,Scott,Heller,Grassley,Toomey,Moran, Rubio, Shelby,Risch,Inhofe, Portman, Sessions

I have been told this a neglected but extremely powerful method of communicating with our elected representatives: THANK THEM WHEN THEY DO THE RIGHT THING.

Respectfully disagree. We strongly supported the Tea Party, but the Republican Party marginalized our reps at every opportunity. Believe me, the culture in the GOP cannot be changed. There is too much money and status quo interests embedded deeply in the party. And they control it.

Attempting to right the ship is a fool’s errand IMHO.

Roberts could go down in history as a great patriot if he fessed up. But he wont’t. He’s a creature of Washington, DC.

You’re right, adios to the GOP. It’s not just us on Free Republic who say this. Lots of other people on other blogs express the same thing. They know when to fold ‘em.

So the Dems are now gonna be forcing all Americans to get health insurance from big corporations after years of railing against them in favor of the little guy. I’m gonna need some time to get over the shock of this /mega sarc tag.
