Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had a very clear target in his dont-call-it-a-filibuster speech: The Republican Party.
Yes, Cruz did bash Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for not allowing any amendments to the legislation that will, eventually, keep the government funded beyond Sept. 30 while stripping the GOP-backed provision to defund Obamacare from the bill.
But he devoted the bulk of his time to calling out his own side. He lambasted supporters of fake and symbolic votes a not-so-subtle reference to the original plan pushed by House GOP leaders on defunding Obamacare. He repeatedly insisted that anyone who doesnt oppose cloture for the bill and that includes the likes of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) are, in essence, backing the full funding of the Affordable Care Act. He wondered why more senators werent in the chamber to take part in the debate.
Where is the outrage? Cruz asked at one point.

CRUZ 2016!!!!
NPR reported on Boehner’s remarks about Cruz this morning. As far as I am concerned, we already have three parties. The new one just has not announced yet.
Regrding national races, the republicans are dead to me.
Mark the names of all GOP senators who vote with Harry Reid and the Democrats for cloture today, the real vote on ObamaCare. They should be eliminated the next time they run for office. It’s a pity they don’t all have to stand for re-election every two years like the House...a flaw in the Constitution made worse by the direct election of senators, which was never intended by the Founders.
I watched part of his speech on c span. I sent him a note of support for what he is doing. The Post nailed this one, he indicted the republican party, and rightly so. The RINOs put up no help, not an iota of help on this simply because they did not wish to either defund OC or they were terrified of a government shutdown and how that would affect their reelections. IMO, you go against the will of the people and you bear the brunt of their angst. Hopefully when the day comes, and it will come sooner than later for some of these scum, they lose their senatorial privileges.
I would say at the end of this episode...twelve Republican senators will be deemed as ‘wasted efforts’ and most Republicans will refuse to sit and watch their wannabe speeches or comments on nightly news.
He’t not splitting the Republican party...he’s simply ending what has been two decades of pretenders within the party. They can go and find another occupation or get a host job on MSNBC by the end of 2014.
As a fellow Texan, I am proud to have Senator Cruz represent our state. I already sent Senator Cornyn emails urging him to support Cruz. Cornyn is up for re-election next year and I hope we have a strong primary candidate because I don’t plan on supporting Cornyn.
Wont he need their votes to kill cloture?
Cruz knows the fight is doomed: it’s another Alamo. He should put up an opponent to Cornyn in the primary and stump for that candidate. The American people still want their incumbents, failure and all!
He already knows who are the traitors who will vote for cloture. We all do. It is no secret. It isn’t Cruz who is splitting the party it is Cowards and faux RINO Republicans who have already destroyed it with their wishy-washy votes.
So its over already?
I’d bet that Cruz has spent the “bulk of his time” shining the light on Obamacare, it’s failures and affects it is having already on the American people. (not bashing Republicans)
He should have worn a Coon Skin Cap and referenced the Alamo!!! Excellent!
Cruz is sure accomplishing more than Obama did his first term...
Het not splitting the Republican party...hes simply ending what has been two decades of pretenders within the party. They can go and find another occupation or get a host job on MSNBC by the end of 2014.
Cowards and faux RINO Republicans who have already destroyed it with their wishy-washy votes.
I really do like “Constitution” party.
IMO it may as well be.
I hope someone has a plan B
There are elected RINOs, who’ve run the GOP for decades. There are no RINO voters. No one votes for these people for reasons of principle. The RINOs are not the Republican Party, they are out for themselves and not their voters or the country.
same here.
Corny has to go!
