lives in cardboard boxes flexible enough to recover from the quakes

File that under: what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. The Almighty has his reasons! :)

The earth is entering a period of increased geological activity. For those living near fault lines, it will means being alert and making preparations for disruptions of services.

Pictures of New Island, more images of damage at link, and death toll now at 265.

Looks rather biblical...

lol, yes it does - countless centuries of living off what ever the land can produce, I guess? Can you imagine being out in a boat fishing and suddenly being thrust 20' into the air? One might be forgiven for being it was the end of the world.

Can’t imagine what could cause it. Suppose to be pretty deep in that area (200’ - 300’), I read.

Didn’t know if you guys had seen this Indian Prof’s research on predicting earthquakes.

Bihar teacher develops technique to predict earthquakes
B K Mishra, TNN Sep 26, 2013, 04.41AM IST

PATNA: Even as seismologists across the world are busy finding a suitable model for predicting earthquakes to minimize the loss of life and property, a school teacher of Motihari in Bihar has developed a time-tested model for forecasting the time, place and magnitude of quakes. He has already forecast more than a dozen earthquakes including Tuesday’s earthquake in Pakistan with almost 90 % accuracy.

Predicting earthquakes is a passion for Umesh Verma, a science teacher of M J K Girls’ School, Motihari. His numerical models have attracted the attention of some NASA scientists who are taking interest in his work.

Lol, I hear there were actually three islands created! Wonder if the almighty caused something similar in the Red Sea, and that’s how the Israelites crossed??

Machogirl, thanks for posting the link! I checked some tide charts. Tidal forces are definitely one of the factors he is using in his EQ prediction model. Who would have thunk it? lol

Tidal force is a much bigger player in the earth's seismic activity cycles, tectonics, and actual climate (ice age) cycles than it's being given credit for.

I notice another interesting link at the site as well:

Earth's pronounced wobble gave advance warning of quake!

Gipper, do you remember our discussion about this: Ants can sense earthquakes a day in advance; sometime back?

If this is true, determine what the ants are keying on and install monitors for real-time, local EQ prediction, as we talked about before! :)

Kind of figured you would jump on that article and link machogirl posted.

Going to be real interesting if some of his predictions prove out.
He's pretty dang specific.
