Charles Martel halted the Muslim invasion of Europe at Tours in 732. The Crusades began around 1096. The Muslims clearly started this conflict.
What were the Muslims doing in Tours to begin with? All the way from Arabia, across North Africa, into Spain. Then they crossed another natural barrier, the Pyrennees into France. By modern standards they would be considered blood thirsty, greedy imperialists. They didn’t get the Muslims out of Spain until 1492. The Crusades wasn’t all holy war I think. There were real Geo -political reasons behind it.
