“As for this “homecoming queen” nonsense, it’s just an extension of political correctness run amok.”

No doubt P.C. has a lot to do with it, however I suspect other factors are involved. Teen rebellion for one — voting for the drag Queen is like poking the old fogies* in the eye. Jealousy is another — only one girl gets to be Queen. If you’re one of the many others; what better way to get back at the “popular girls” than to deny them their big prize? Well, making a mockery of that prize is probably even better. Finally, there’s the “15 Minutes of Fame” factor. How many national stories are written about high schools, where the Homecoming King is a boy, and the Homecoming Queen is a girl? They’ll still be talking about this at their 25th Annual Reunion.

You make some good points. And if the students wanted to make a mockery of the "homecoming queen" prize - well, mission accomplished.

I do feel bad for the kid though. While everybody else pats themselves on the back for being "tolerant" and "progressive", this young boy is headed for a train wreck. His parents and his elders have failed him by enabling him in this misguided path.
