EDD workers get threats as frustration grows over unpaid claims

As the number of Californians who are without their regular unemployment payments ballooned this week, people’s frustrations grew. Some have been taking their anger to online forums, while others apparently took it out on employees of the Employment Development Department.

Meanwhile, Levy said that on Thursday, the agency had more than 60,000 backlogged claims that it was processing late as it tries to catch up to tens of thousands of complaints from out-of-work Californians waiting on a payment.

The backlog began over Labor Day weekend, when an internal computer upgrade mistakenly and automatically marked some accounts with a stop-pay flag, Levy said

She added that only a fraction of accounts have been affected, but while that number was 20,000 last week, it multiplied to 90,000 Wednesday, and was down to 60,000 Thursday

Time will tell, I guess.

I looked around to see if I could find the fund deficit. It was $10 bil at the end of 2012. Can’t find anything current.

Also, you only have to make $46k/yr to receive the max benefit of $450/wk.

I have a relative unemployed in Taxifornia, they submitted their clam forms but did not receive their benefits, calling is impossible, they have cut the phone hours to 8am to noon Mon-Thur. If you call at 7:59:59 you immediately receive a message that they are backlogged with calls, good bye. My relative tells me that if he emails EDD with a question it takes a minimum of ten working days to get an answer. My feeling is the same as others have posted, I think Edd is holding calims up do to lack of money, it’s the same game Medicare and insurance companies play.
