About 60 percent of the hospital systems costs are in labor, salaries and benefits, said spokeswoman Eileen Sheil, and theres only so much you can do with non-staff cost cutting.
Healthcare reform has really changed things, and the burden of cost is going to be falling on patients, she said. We want to make sure we can keep care affordable....
...Sheil said the Clinic has not been filling vacant positions in many departments for a while, and some departments may be able to meet their targeted cuts by attrition and non-staff cuts.
Other places might have to look at reducing staff if they cant make the targets without cutting in other areas, she said.
The Clinic, which had about $6 billion in operating revenue last year, is the regions largest employer with about 44,000 employees.

Uh? Imagine that.
Ohio Ping!
Cleveland Clinic just laid an egg all over 0bamacare.
The Cleveland Clinic is one of the premier medical institutions in the world.
And the ‘Rats have managed to land a crippling blow upon it.
Walgreen announced 160,000 lay offs. I suspect the chit is hitting the fan and the political system in DC could care less....because this will be good for us whether we like it or not.
Amen to that, Ben....I’ve been cancer free for 21 years —because of the fine staff at Cleveland Clinic. I sure do hope that this is temporary —but I fear for our health care system.
People from all over the world head there for their treatments —crippling blow, indeed!
Very little sparks the comment section on Cleveland.com, but the topic is pretty hot over there.
This, at least locally, is a huge story AND a huge admission.
Healtcare Reform is being directly blamed.
The Cleveland Clinic is full of racists who hate a black President.
WHO KNEW??/s
The Cleveland Clinic released the following statement:
To prepare for healthcare reform, Cleveland Clinic is transforming the way care is delivered to patients. Over the past several years, we have had an ongoing focus on driving efficiencies, lowering costs, reducing duplication in services and enhancing quality to make healthcare affordable to patients.
Although we have made progress, we need to further reduce costs to the organization by $330 million in 2014. We are carefully evaluating all aspects of our system to accomplish this. Some of the initiatives include offering early retirement to 3,000 eligible employees, reducing operational costs, stricter review of filling vacant positions, and lastly workforce reductions.
Through these changing times, we are focused on providing the highest quality of care to our patients in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
Stories like this are all over, but they get NO national traction. WHY???
Could they be shy some $300M in endowments?
I don’t know? WTAM has been playing the blurb though all day every half-hour locally.
As mentioned up thread Cleveland Clinic ain’t no small fry in the medical world...and for them to come out and blame 0bamacare directly is pretty huge.
They are saying it is due to 0bamacare, not lack of endowments?
Missed that one regarding Walgreens.
The best defense is a good offense.
The hospital is on the attack. The hospital is fighting the local rat liberal wackos by proving them to be liars and thieves.
The public must rise up in arms to destroy the liberal scoundrels. The public can never act, it can only react
The hospital is promoting reaction
Yes, I know. But I’m wondering if they are not saying that Obamacare has led to lower endowments...
The actual press statement is in post 8, doesn’t appear to state anything in regards to lower endowments?
“Walgreen announced 160,000 lay offs”
I think you heard the story wrong, they are no longer going to provide insurance for 160k employees. Shipping them off to Obamcare.
IU Health in Central Indiana is cutting 800 jobs, and they are openly saying it’s 0bamacare. It’s gotten plenty of local play; it was the lead story on all the news broadcasts and front page of the Indianpolis Star.
I wonder if they have 300 or more highly paid staff making 6-7 figure salaries?
