House Committees to Hold 3 Hearings on Benghazi This Week [LIVE THREAD] (Update: #218)
John Boehner ^ | September 18, 2013 | John Boehner

Posted on 09/18/2013 4:02:23 AM PDT by don-o

In the year since the Benghazi terrorist attack took the lives of four Americans, House Republicans have continually pressed the Obama administration for answers regarding events preceding the attack, the administration’s response, and what has been done to protect the lives of Americans going forward. Those efforts will continue with three House committee hearings this week. Here’s more:

The House Foreign Affairs Committee holds a hearing Wednesday, September 18th at 10 am ET titled: “Benghazi: Where is the State Department Accountability?” The committee notes that four employees placed on administration leave following the attack have recently been re-assigned within the department. This hearing “will examine why no one inside the State Department has yet been held accountable for the failures and deficiencies identified” in the Benghazi Accountability Review Board’s report. [TUNE IN HERE ] The House Oversight & Government Reform Committee holds a hearing Thursday, September 19th at 9:30 am ET with Benghazi Accountability Review Board co-chairs Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering and Admiral Michael G. Mullen, USN (Ret.), members of the Department’s security panel that conducted a review, and family members of those killed in the attack. The hearing will focus on the review board’s investigation and questions that still remain regarding the attack and the administration’s response. [TUNE IN HERE] The House Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing Thursday, September 19th at 3:30 pm ET on lessons from Benghazi and the Defense Department’s ability to respond to similar attacks today. [TUNE IN HERE]

Earlier this year, House Republicans released an interim report on Benghazi outlining the findings of five committees of jurisdiction investigating the attacks, and laying out next steps – including additional hearings and an ongoing effort to obtain access to witnesses and information being withheld by the Obama administration. “It is disgraceful that one year later, even though a number of the terrorists who participated in this attack have been identified, not a single one has been brought to justice, Speaker Boehner said last week, pledging that Republicans “will press forward with our investigation until we have answers, full accountability, and justice.”

Kennedy answers: no stand down order.

Is asked: who decided there was no resources to help?

Ms. Ros-Lehtinen not letti ng him dally.

Kennedy says nearest military force was in Djibuti(sp)

Ms. R-L says OK, message to embassies is that we can’t help, you all on our own. Cuts off Kennedy and says to him that funding was not an issue.

Gregory Meeks of NY is up. Blah blah blah, we have heard all this before.

Mr Meeks quickly picks up Obama’s water bucket and has PK get up off the floor where Ms R left him.

Meeks asking about making embassies fortresses - How can they do their jobs?

Wonder if anyone will ask what the actual job in Benghazi WAS?

Kennedy talking about attacks on Tunisia and Khartoum; embassies held out for over eight hours; no casualties.

Now with new funding, we can bring up facilities to new levels/construction.

exit82 says—then why use old buildings like the Benghazi compounds by State and by CIA that could not be defended?

No one wants to ask what was the CIA doin g in their BEnghazi faciltiy. If the CIA was not there, no one would have been evacuated from the embassy compund alive.

It appears so. There are some in Congress who want the truth exposed, but not most.

No base close how about this one: 468 miles as the crow flys

Naval Air Station Sigonella (IATA: NSY, ICAO: LICZ), “The Hub of the Med”, is a U.S. Navy installation at NATO Base Sigonella and an Italian Air Force base (Italian: Base aerea di Sigonella) in Sicily, Italy. Although a tenant of the Italian Air Force, NAS Sigonella acts as landlord to more than 40 other U.S. commands and activities. It is located 15 km (8 NM) west and 11 km (6 NM) south of the city of Catania, and some 40 km (22 NM) south of Mount Etna. Because of its location near the center of the Mediterranean Sea, NASSIG is well-placed to support operations by the U.S. 6th Fleet, other U.S. military units, and U.S. allies and coalition partners.

It also serves as an Italian base for the 41º Stormo Antisom (41st Antisubmarine Warfare Wing).

Among the aircraft that fly from this island base are U.S. Air Force C-130, C-17 and C-5 airlifters, KC-135 and KC-10 tankers and U.S. Navy P-3 Orions, C-2 Greyhounds C-130s, and C-9B Skytrain IIs and C-40A Clippers, and Italian Air Force Breguet Br.1150 Atlantics. It is one of the most frequently used stops for U.S. airlift aircraft bound from the continental United States to Southwest Asia and the Indian Ocean.

NAS Sigonella has the best claim to be hub of U.S. naval air operations in the Mediterranean. The base command is landlord to more than 40 other U.S. units. Among the largest are a rotating P-3C patrol squadron; a Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station; and a U.S. Naval Hospital. The hospital was built in 1992. Previously, there was only a clinic and the closest U.S. Naval Hospital was at Naples. Sigonella is home to more than 4,000 troops, civilian personnel, and family members.

NAS Sigonella is the Navy’s second largest security command, second only to that located at Naval Support Activity Bahrain. NAS Sigonella also has a large support of security personnel from NR NSF Sigonella, a Navy Reserve command based out of NOSC Detroit at Selfridge ANGB, Michigan.

The base comprises two sections: NAS I was the site of the original U.S. base but is now a support facility and NAS II which includes the runways, operations and most tenant commands. NAS I also contains the Navy Exchange and Commissary, the school, and some homes, mainly for the commodore of Task Force 67, the air station commanding officer, air station executive officer and commanding officers of tenant activities. NAS I also is host to other facilities, mainly for entertainment. NAS II is now only used as a service base

Chris Smith (NJ) up now.

Question a bout Stevens and others request for additional security help.

Kennedy says all requests for security for temporary Benghazi facility were met.

One request not met—no to massive guard towers.

Smith asked why hasn’t senior staff and SOS aware of these requests.

Kennedy says he was formally interviewed by ARB.

Kennedy repeats that there was never a stand down order.

Smith asks about non disclosure agreements? Kennedy not aware of any. Smith has asked where the survivors are. Kennedy says one still in hospital, and four are on assignemnt again.

“Wonder if anyone will ask what the actual job in Benghazi WAS?”

Bingo! That is what they continue to hide because if Obama and Hillary were gun running to AQ linked groups, it is an impeachable offense. Obama waives law against arming terrorists just the other day without constitutional authority but it will not protect him from what he did before in any event.

Smith missed a few openings. Another was Kennedy’s denial of non-disclosure agreements.
