The US threatened military retaliation against Bashar Assad after the Aug. 21 gas attack. When Congress balked, Obama embraced Russia’s plan for Syria to turn over its chemical arsenal. ‘I don’t think that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has the same values that we do,’ the president said. But ‘we both have an interest in preventing chaos [and] terrorism.’
President Barack Obama sent a message Sunday to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his success in avoiding U.S. military action in Syria is not a blank check to prop up the Syrian strongman.
A day after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart signed off on the Putin-proposed plan to put Syria’s poison gas arsenal under international control, Obama sought to dispel the perception that he was weakened by a deal that defused a military response to Bashar Assad’s chemical attack.
“I don’t think that Mr. Putin has the same values that we do,” Obama said. “And I think, obviously, by protecting Mr. Assad, he has a different attitude about the Assad regime.”

Several prominent U.S. politicians have opposed the deal, including Sen. John McCain, who called it a “loser.”
“We are now depending on the goodwill of the Russian people ,” McCain told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And I am of the firm belief … that this is a very, very big gamble.”

Yes it is. Putin didn’t avoid U.S. military action nearly as much as Obama did, despite all his vain and empty huffing and puffing.
