Why do they do this? Is the land cheaper? Less opposition from citizen groups? Less environmental impact if a stadium is in a bad area?

They have a perfectly good site in Doraville with easy access to public transportation....but the Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed pulled out all the stops to keep the team in the city proper.

It's very close to a nasty neighborhood and they have a lot of trouble with "aggressive panhandlers".

Remember a few years ago when a fan in the Georgia Dome got hit by a falling bullet that punctured the roof?

The mayor basically wants to put the new stadium approximately where that bullet came from.
