Russian diplomat warns that North Korea faces 'man-made disaster' after satellite images show it has restarted ageing nuclear reactor
The Yongbyon nuclear facility in North Korea was closed in 2007 under the terms of a disarmament agreement Its five megawatt reactor can produce plutonium for weapons and bombs
New satellite images have captured steam rising from the complex This suggests the nuclear reactor has been restarted, according to a U.S. research institute

But a senior Russian diplomat has claimed that the outdated reactor is in a 'nightmarish state' and that the nation could face a potential nuclear disaster if it has been made operational again.
The source told the Interfax News Agency: 'Our main concern is linked to a very likely man-made disaster as a consequence. 'The reactor is in a nightmarish state, it is a design dating back to the 1950s. 'For the Korean peninsula this could entail terrible consequences, if not a man-made catastrophe.'

P!
now this is the sort of thing the UN was made for. And this is intervention most everyone can get behind
I am pretty certain that NK is doing it as a new way of getting concessions from neighbors. Direct military threat(missile launch, nuclear test, shelling S. Korean islands, and sinking SK navy ship) did not work. Now they try indirect approach, restarting an unstable reactor which can produce weapons grade plutonium. Another round of brinkmanship.
they produce nothing so yea. Concessions is pretty much their economy.
Apparently, it is emitting gamma rays already. Witness the creation of an extra “e” in the mutated form of the word “aging”.
Don’t pick on British too much.
They can just have bill Clinton and Madelaine Albright agree to refurbish the reactor again...
And make yearly payment to NK for reactor maintenance job, to the tune of âpre-devaluedâ one billion dollars a year, since dollar will be devalued substantially in years to come.
And another autographed basketball.
I hope Rodman enjoys his next trip to Korea :-)
With some luck, he will be able to glow in the dark.
What direction are the prevailing winds over the reactor
site? Water flow/rivers?
So this like North Korea version of Cheynobl RIGHT
There is a river, Chongchon-gang, less than 10 miles away, which flows into Yellow Sea.
Trade Wind blows from East to West. There are seasonal winds, which comes from NW to SE or SE to NW.
May turn into that.
You would think the NKs could take a look at Chernobyl and Japan’s reactor then think about the results of an ageing reactor breaking and leaking lots of radiation.
I don’t think Chia Chub really give crap about his people
In the northern hemisphere weather typically moves west. Watch out Japan!
Media reports like this are intended to incite hysteria and fail to mention obvious facts that would quickly degrade the importance of this “story”.
The photos clearly show that the cooling tower, that was torn down years ago, has not been rebuilt.
The little bit of steam coming out is a byproduct of the heating system needed to keep all those buildings warm.
