One longtime editor at this newspaper left me a phone message. He said something like:
Im telling you this now, because I know youre going to be bugging me later. Texan of the Year for 2013: Ted Cruz, without question.
Cruz, without question. Is that right?
Figure, Cruz hasnt even completed his first nine months in the Senate and already is established as a must quote representing the right wing of the GOP. Hes been courting Iowa voters already despite being a raw novice in elected politics.
Doesnt Cruz fit the bill as political phenom? I think the right wing of our readership would root for him.
The left wing? Theyve got Wendy Davis.
In head-to-head competition, though, Id say Cruz measures up more as a consequential figure. He actually is on the big stage and already has emerged as an impact player.
Davis has delighted Texas long-suffering left with her filibuster that temporarily delayed an anti-abortion bill. Shes got Democrats very excited, but her impact is more about raising expectations at this point. Is that right?
Which one makes more sense as the Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year? Or does either?
Your view: Cruz or Davis for Texan of the Year?
Over the last decade this newspaper's editorial board has recognized the uncommon impact of a wide variety of individuals and, occasionally, groups, for the title of Texan of the Year. The final decision is made by board members at the end of the year. But I wonder, if it were up to you, would Cruz, Davis or someone else get your nomination?

EDITORS NOTE: The response to the poll at the bottom of this post has overwhelmed the online tool to the point that its been refusing to take your votes from time to time. If you get a message saying youve voted before, but you havent, thats why. Please bear with us and try back later. Fair warning: the traffic on this post was very high until midnight last night.
RE-FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me if you want to be added or removed from the Fearless Poll-Freeping Freepers Ping list. (multiple votes using multiple internetz devices are allowed!) And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list) (gordongekko909, founder of the pinglist, stays on the list until his ghost signs up for the list)
i dont know who to vote for
What kind of a poll is this - only lets you vote once. Cruz is finally leading though.
I wonder if they are letting non-citizens vote.
Cruz is a conservative Senator. Davis is a pro-abort wench.
Farts? LOL
Do you who James Howard is? I’d guess it’s just the name of the guy who voted for himself 30 times.
Looks like the Liberal Baby Killers own the Poll comments section.
Must be more of them in Texas than I would have imagined.
Wendy Davis?????? What a joke she is.
You get answers like that when you ask a question with a fill-in-the-blank option.
I copied that image right off the website with FireShot, since there was no option to “save image” or “copy image.”
Believe me, I would never recommend Farts for any kind of recognition.
He stinks.
Well nobody will voting for Johnny Football after his 2 costly interceptions today.
Who? [not a spotes fan]
The quarterback of Texas A&M University’s football team. Last year he won the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the “most outstanding player” in college football, usually it goes to Quarterback or Running Back who had a good year on a successful team.
He got votes in this poll both under his name, Johnny Manziel, and his nickname, Johnny Football. Yesterday he lost to Alabama.
Aw, poor guy. Thank you for the information. [smiles]
Your welcome.
He made the news for acting like a jackass over the summer so not many people feel bad for him. I wanted him to win though cause Alabama is the 2 time defending champion (and they have 3 of the last 4) and I’d like to see someone else win.
Heh. Who’s “FARTS?”
