Were a bit closer to a government shutdown today. And that may not be such a bad thing. Heres the deal:
1) House Republicans pulled their bill to fund the government. The House was expected to vote Wednesday on a bill to continue funding the federal government. The initial whip count showed the bill 18 votes short of passage, so the vote didnt happen. Why is the bill 18 votes short of passage? Obamacare, of course.
2) The GOPs small Obamacare problem. The vote was delayed because the House GOP cant decide on what to do about Obamacare. Hardcore conservatives want to refuse to fund the government as long as any of that funding goes to Obamacare which is to say, they want to shut down the government over Obamacare. This is a fight that House leadership believes they will lose, and lose very badly. So Team Boehner tried to finesse it. The funding bill required a vote on defunding Obamacare. But House conservatives quickly realized that they would lose the vote in the Senate and the result would be the federal government would get funded, and Obamacare would be funded along with it. So they turned on the bill, and, fearing for its passage, House leadership delayed the vote.
3) The GOPs big Obamacare problem. Behind all this is a simple fact: The GOP has lost on Obamacare. They didnt have the votes to stop it from passing in 2010. They didnt have the votes to repeal it in 2011. They didnt have the votes to win the presidency and the Senate by campaigning against it in 2012. And they really have no way to stop it in 2013.
Now its going into effect, and once it goes into effect and begins delivering health insurance to tens of...

You’re right! It IS a good thing.
Boehner should be relived of his house leadership position, at least Pelosi was a junk yard dog, he is a whining wussy, bending over for the moron in chief.
It may well be the Republic’s last best hope.
What would happen if the government shut down for a month and no one noticed?
:)
SHUT THE WHOLE THING DOWN AND START OVER!
This time, play the rules. No more cockamamie agencies like the EPA, etc.
I’m guessing that a few hundred million a year ought to be enough to run everything (except the military) if we make the Fed as bare bones as the Founders had hoped it would stay. Put most of what should belong to the States back to the States.
One big problem for the Dems: the majority of people in this country don’t want Obamacare.
Ezra “Journolist” Klein is a slimy little weasel.
We'd all be better off because there would be less mind numbingly stupid laws and taxes
FTA: “Congress has a rigorous vacation schedule to adhere to, giving it precious little time to accomplish the goal of not shutting down the government”
VACATION SCHEDULE? They can’t attend to business because of their VACATiON SCHEDULE? Didn’t they just get back from vacation> Who do they think they are? Little Obamas?
I say FIRE them all and stop funding their precious vacations.
Hardcore conservatives want to refuse to fund the government as long as any of that funding goes to Obamacare which is to say, they want to shut down the government over Obamacare.
There is not a shred of truth in this statement: the conservatives will explicitly fund the government, they will simply failed to fund Obamacare; there is no desire to shut down the government over Obamacare; if the government were to shut down over Obamacare it will be done by Harry Reid or Brack Obama but not by conservatives in the House of Representatives or elsewhere.
Knowing this is maddening because this jerk on MSNBC and the Washington Post is spewing nothing other than a Goebbels-like repeated lie which has now become so shopworn from repeated airings that Goebbels himself would be proud to see the vindication of his own Maxim about repeating a lie often enough. But the blame should be shared by the Republican establishment which has sided with the big lie from the very beginning and equated a disinclination to fund Obamacare with the desire to shut down the government.
The Rinos inside the Beltway are as culpable as Democrats for conditioning the public to believe the big lie.
Ezra Klein is the editor of Wonkblog and a communist at the Washington Post.
Or at least that's the way I first read it.
More commie pap from our friend Ezra:
The White House may really be about to win on Syria
I guess he's a little put out that we don't have a completely one party socialist government system.
Shut her down.
EXACTLY! I've been trying to make this case for a while. Republicans are again caught arguing a false premise. In this case, whether or not the GOP wants to shut down the government. "We don't want to shut down the government, but...."
BS! The House has to pass a budget. If it excludes funding for Obamacare, GREAT! It will be the dems that vote no on the budget, therefore causing a delay and eventually "shutting down" the government. It will be the dems that "shut down government". Don't argue over whether or not we "want" to. Rather, say they have do not have that power once they have passed a budget. It's up to the dems in Senate.
Maybe the problem is that there is a move to defund JUST 0care.... How about modifying that to defunding 0care PLUS the White Hut.
It's happened several times, likely in your lifetime. Do you remember when?
There you go.
