Syria chemical arms destruction 'immensely difficult': IISS

Destroying Syria's chemical weapons under a Russian plan would be "immensely difficult" and may do little to end the conflict there, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) said on Thursday.

Russia and Iran would have to play a role in dismantling the chemical arms stockpiled by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in a process that would take years, said experts from the London-based think-tank.

"There has never been a situation where the international community has attempted to secure, seize and destroy weapons of mass destruction during an ongoing conflict," IISS proliferation expert Mark Fitzpatrick told a news conference at the launch of the group's annual review of world affairs.

"The best case was in Iraq and even there it took many months to assemble teams and years to destroy the arsenal. In Libya, it has been many years and still not all the mustard gas has been destroyed," he said.

I’m shocked. Could this just be a clever delaying tactic being employed by those pesky Russians against the foolish plans of our Bozo President?

I think we all know the answer to that. But Kerry is a smart guy. He will figure it out himself in a few months.

Sounds like an opportunity for a Russian business.

If you believe the BOzo Admin’s story that Assad used chemical weapons on his own women and children, which is pure b.s. btw, how was bombing them going to fix the situation? You’d have to have a lot of boots on the ground if you wanted to relieve Assad of his chemical weapons.

The whole thing is lies stacked on top of lies. The people who are murdering Christians if they don’t convert or beheading or gang raping non-Sunnis are the ones who’ll be in power once Assad is gone. Your tax dollars hard at work. Oh, but it’s only now the CIA is funnelling weapons to these yahoos, riiight. Well, if people are stupid enough to believe it why not keep telling whopper after whopper?

First I’ve seen anything that they will destroy the weapons. Russia just said ‘under int’l control’.
