President Obama and members of Congress suddenly find themselves waiting on the gadfly of the world stage to call their next move in America's foreign policy -- Vladimir Putin, who until now was derided as the obstacle to an international solution on the Syria crisis.
The head-spinning turn of events has many lawmakers worried, openly voicing concern that the Russians are in control, and that they and the Assad regime are not the most trustworthy deal makers.
Waiting in the wings is Secretary of State John Kerry, who will travel Thursday to Geneva to meet with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Members of the Syrian opposition have also warned any deal that has Syrian President Bashar Assad turn over his chemical weapons would not stop him from using conventional weapons to keep fighting Syria's bloody civil war.
"Putin and Assad are not exactly people whose promises you accept blindly," Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., said in a statement.
But Engel and others say they're willing to give the Russia-backed proposal a chance.
After Obama asked Congress to postpone a vote on authorizing the use of force Tuesday night, Russia seemed to be steering the debate.
Moscow on Wednesday reportedly gave the U.S. its official plan for bringing the weapons under international control.
Putin, though, is trying to extract additional concessions out of the U.S. He called Tuesday for the Obama administration to abandon the threat of military action against Syria, suggesting the diplomatic option would only work if the U.S. backs down.
Lavrov made similar comments.
Obama did not address that demand in his speech on Tuesday...

Obama puts his faith in Putin. I don’t. Some people do, though.
We went through this with an adolescent from Dope, Arkansas and then the adults came back and righted the ship, for a while.
Dignity and respect were restored.
I recall shortly before 9/11 being asked by a prominent advisor to a Democrat if I watched Bush on TV or even paid attention ti what was going on.
I replied I didn’t care and while George is a mere placeholder(I thought at the time) the team surrounding him are people I respect and expect them to act closely to American values I hold.
I don’t think I turned on the TV to watch his presser’s and maybe only for one or two State of the Union’s.
I just expected my guys to act approriately.
I didn’t hear Fauxbama’s speech last night but, if Putin is seen as the adult here I couldn’t care less.
Not looking for Our Idiot to be embarrassed(bonus) but, there it is.
He wanted to sit in the big boy seat and I do wish the moronic hawks on my side could share in the humiliation but, their jesters suck up to them and inflate their ego’s.
I agree with you. Putin and Obama both claim to be Christians the way that Napoleon claimed to be a Catholic.
Forgot the point of my post.
The American Presidency isn’t diminished by Barry.
It’s on hold until a competent adult moves back in.
Red Dawn isn’t so unthinkable anymore.
Because Obama only appoints Leftists with even less knowledge about the world than he has, we now can expect the dolt, John Kerry, to be rolled by the wily Russians. Russian leaders play chess. U.S. leaders play basketball. Enough said.
Like George Bush!!!! /s
That’s the ticket.
I imagine Putin has morals. After all, Russia did ban outward gay stuff. Like putting on a parade.
Yep..America's position in the world is far stronger and more secure under a president who uses American military force wisely than under the current pacifist in the WH or the string of Libertarian Isolationists/Pacifists who want to replace him.
I haven't seen much to like from the Obama administration, I really think 3 more years of being kicked around by a second rate power like Russia could wake the voters up...
My early thinking has been that if Hillary runs she is unbeatable but 3 more years of weak foreign policy/and erosion of the capability of the American armed forces under Obama will be to much even for the Dims to tolerate (much like the Colorado recall yesterday). Carter gave us Reagan Obama could give us the next great Conservative...if the GOP doesn't screw it up and nominate another Lib.
Hillary will show but she won’t complete her courses.
She will still get at least a More”B” but, she’s going to move on after bringing the stalking horse forward.
She’s accomplished enough and now it’s time to move on to her next stage in life.
Maybe she’ll come out.
