Brooklyn resident Jeffrey Babbitt was left in a coma and clinically brain dead after being attacked in Union Square on Wednesday, according to a criminal complaint. The photograph was taken earlier this year by neighbor Robert Pizzimenti.
A Brooklyn man is in a coma in critical condition after he was assaulted by a man who threatened to "punch the first white man I see," authorities said Saturday.
Neighbors of the victim, Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, were in shock after learning of the Wednesday attack in Manhattan.
The Manhattan district attorney's office has charged Lashawn Marten, 31, of Manhattan, with second- and third-degree assault. Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, an NYPD spokesman said.
Babbitt's doctors told police that he's clinically brain dead at Bellevue Hospital Center, according to the criminal complaint.
Marten is accused of punching Babbitt in the face at Union Square Park, causing him to fall to the sidewalk, hitting his head. Marten is black; Babbitt is white, police said.
Neighbors said Babbitt has lived with his ailing 94-year-old mother, Lucille, in a Sheepshead Bay co-op for nearly two decades.
"Everybody's broken up about this," said a neighbor, Audrey Feifer, 75. "If you had to go to the doctor or anywhere, he would take you."(continued)

Doesn’t surprise me. In all my years in government I never met anything resembling a conservative in social work, counseling, community colleges, welfare, housing, community organizing and all the non-profits that I dealt with. Hard-core Leftists, every one.

It’s Bloomberg’s city. If he has the guts, he can tell the prosecutors to get serious about crime, to fight to defend “stop and frisk”, and to tell the leftists on the City Council to go to hell.

If he is brain dead that means he is dead, period. The guy should be charged with 1st degree murder(planned in advance), to hell with hate crimes.
Stop and frisk is unconstitutional, I don't give a sh** how much crime it stops and if it stops any I would be surprised, like all violations of the constitution all it does is impose restrictions on the freedom of law abiding citizens while doing very little to curb crime. Anyone who wants and supports this type of law is an idiot, and that includes you.
Whatever the law is, it should be applied to the maximum as this appears to be a racially motivated crime.
Crimes such as this can rapidly increase (and exponentially), so 'the book needs to be thrown' at the offender is clearly the case here.
“Stop and frisk” with probable cause has been held to be constitutional. It is all about how it is applied. Besides the old “lump in the pants pocket” approach, also recogized related “probable cause” items including continued furtive looks(ing), continued presence in a high crime area at unusual times, wearing clothes that conceal ones identity, etc.
The NYPD has taken almost 1,000 illegal or illegally possessed guns of the streets in the past ten years, according to news reports. They weren’t taken from my friend who is a legal concealed carry, retired police officer, or off of Joe Blow from the Stock Exchange.
They were seized in high crime areas and from many with criminal records or no legal right to possess a gun (under age, no license, etc).
My sons a cop and I’ve worked on both an organized crime task force and a national security murder trial. Plus I have an AA Certificate (equal to an AA Degree) in Police Science.
I know something about crime and crime fighting. Guess that makes me an “educated idiot” but at least I’ve been out there helping to stop crime.
What’s your excuse?
